Kat Byrne's Notes / For SA&T Specialist Use Only
I am going to tell you what I know about Nikitin. It will not take long. That is the point.
He is a permanent fixture at this facility, which means he was here before I arrived and will likely be here after both of us are gone. He does not appear on the PleistoVentures org chart in any meaningful way. He reports to Moscow. What he reports, to whom specifically, and how often are not things this facility has visibility into. His security clearance has not been verified by PleistoVentures because PleistoVentures does not have the standing to verify it. He has access to containment monitoring systems. I did not grant that access. I have not found documentation showing who did.
He is what the training materials would call a gray man. In practice, that means he has spent a career making himself the least interesting person in any room, and he is extremely good at it. He does not generate complaints. He does not generate compliments. He attends required briefings, says the appropriate things, and leaves. If you asked the research staff to describe him, most of them would take a moment to remember he exists. This is not an accident. This is craft, and I have enough years behind me to recognize it and to respect what it takes to maintain it at that level.
He came of age in Leningrad in 1989, which is a sentence that tells you a great deal if you know what to do with it. I know what to do with it. The short version is that the formation that produces someone like Nikitin does not produce people who make operational mistakes out of carelessness. Whatever he is doing here, he is doing it deliberately and he is doing it well. That is not a reason to trust him. It is a reason to be precise about what you do not know.
What I do not know: the actual scope of his reporting obligations. Whether any of our researchers have been approached in ways that did not register as approaches. What he does between 2200 and 0600. Whether the samovar in his quarters - which I have seen once, briefly, through an open door - is exactly what it appears to be. I am not saying it is not a samovar. I am saying I noted it.
What I do know: his YouTube traffic showed up in routine proxy log review in November 2025. It is not what you would expect. I am keeping this between us, and by us I mean you, me, and nobody else at this facility. The playlist link is below. I am not telling you this to be amusing, though I will admit it felt that way when I found it. I am telling you because it is the only unguarded thing I have observed about this man in the time I have been here, which makes it the most significant thing I have observed about this man in the time I have been here. A person who controls every visible surface this completely has an interior life somewhere. That is where it is.
The January 2026 log review turned up something else. January 7th, 23:17 local time. A Google search from his workstation for "Susan Johnson" with several refinements over about forty minutes - city names, a university, a year. Nothing that looked like he found what he was looking for. I am not going to tell you what I think that means. You are in a security awareness course and you can work it out. What I will tell you is that it was the only personal search I have ever found on his workstation, before or since, and that January 7th is Orthodox Christmas, and that 23:17 is not a time when anyone is working. I noted it. I am passing it to you. Make of it what you will, and then set it aside, because it does not change the security calculus one way or the other. It just tells you there is a person in there somewhere. There usually is.
He will be professionally courteous to you. He will answer direct questions with answers that are technically accurate and operationally useless. He will not obstruct your work and he will not assist it. If you think you are building a relationship with him, you are probably being assessed. I do not say this to discourage you from talking to him. I say it so you go into that conversation correctly calibrated.
He is the part of this facility I cannot fully account for. I have made my peace with that, provisionally. You should know what provisional means here: it means I am watching, and now you are too.
